Fight Or Suicide?

Disclaimer-  The purpose of me, writing on such a topic is not to provide ideas to increase suicidal thinking but to create awareness by making people understand that suicide is NOT an option. Every problem has a solution and a bad phase comes in everyone's life. Ending life by being impulsive is not a permanent solution. "Pain is inevitable, and suffering is optional." Moreover, everything written here is extracted after great research from reliable sources like the official websites of WHO and NIMHANS and talking to people who have been through such overwhelming situations and are leading a quality life today.

Depression, Anxiety, Fear of circumstances, Overthinking, Sense of Insecurity, Loneliness, Disappointment, Prominence,  Academic pressures, breakups, failure in relationships, unpaid loans, hopelessness, loss of a job, loss of social status, imprisonment, bullying or trolling, financial problems, incurable disease, social isolation, frustration, marital disharmony with spouse...

'SUICIDE!'

Suicidal tendencies are "unrecognised" and often "ignored" in India. There is no specific age group that can be a victim of suicide. Right from youngsters to oldies...anyone can have suicidal thoughts and can think of it. Suicide has now become a leading cause of morbidity, mortality and socioeconomic losses.

Global And National Analysis

Talking about worldwide data, there were an estimated 7,93,000 suicide deaths worldwide in 2016, which indicates an annual global age-standardized suicide rate of 10.5 per 1,00,000 population. At the global level, suicides are among the four leading causes of death, in the age group of 15 to 55 years, as per WHO reports.

Talking about India, as per NIMHANS reports and data, every 3 seconds, 1 person dies of suicide, which is an alarming rate.

Reasons And Warning Indications

The researches show that suicide is an extreme form of clinical depression. The reasons behind this could be anything, that I mentioned in the very beginning. It is a desperate attempt to escape suffering that has become unbearable. Blinded by feelings of hopelessness, loneliness, dissatisfaction, self-criticizing, anxiety or overthinking; a suicidal person can't see any way of finding relief except through death. People feel that by resorting to suicide, they'll get relief from pain, paradoxically, they forget that relief is a feeling and they need to stay alive to feel it.

Almost everyone who attempts suicide has given some clue or warning. Don't ignore even indirect references to death. Statements like "I can't see any way out", or "I don't know if I'll see you again"- doesn't matter how casually or jokingly said, may indicate serious suicidal feelings. A more subtle warning sign is hopelessness. Studies revealed that desperation is a strong suicide predictor. The person thinking of suicide may lose interest in day-to-day activities, neglect his or her appearance, and show big changes in eating or sleeping habits. Feeling low for more than 2 weeks may also be a reason.

Never be like that talking about suicide may give someone suicidal ways. In fact, the opposite is true. Discussing things openly can help save a life.

Solution and Preventions

  1. Discussing problems-  Talking about suicidal feelings can be a difficult task for anyone. But still, taking a bold step and talking to parents or friends can prove really a blessing. If one doesn't have trust in anyone, he/she can simply go through some National Stress Helpline numbers from Google and talk there. For reference, I have provided one here-  +91 8376804102, which is basically the Fortis Stress Helpline number. Not doing publicity, these people are well trained and will provide you with the best solution. All you need to do is just follow.
  2. Understand and don't act as if you are shocked- One needs to listen patiently,  understand and provide hope that everything will go well. Apart from that, do remember that you should offer support so that the suicidal person could make a personal commitment to recovery.
  3. Keep supporting for a long time- Though the immediate suicidal crisis has passed, stay in touch with the person. Sharing of intimate thoughts and emotions is the key. Your support is crucial for your friend or loved one to remain on the recovery track.

At last, I'll say that life is wonderful and brittle. Don't delay essential things in life like smiling over little things, laughing, doing something that really matters to you, playing and studying (!), and spending more time with people who sincerely matter. Death is a terminal reward which we all are gonna get someday, but like all other good things, you need to wait for it to happen, else, it will become a tragedy for your loved ones as well as for you.
